Does my child need a Pedal Ready Assessment?

We're in the business of making your child's 'learn to cycle' journey awesome. So before we jump straight in, we'd love you to come for a Pedal Ready Assessment if you answer YES to any of the following…

  • Your child has used stabilisers (for any length of time)
  • Your child has never or rarely used a balance bike
  • Your child is under the age of 4.5 years

If coming to a Pedal Ready Assessment is a bit of a trek (we're talking 30 minutes or more travel time), then give us a call so we can have a chat and make a plan.

Why do stabilisers matter?

If your child has used stabilisers, you're not alone! So don't worry. While stabilisers are commonplace – they are actually a huge hindrance to teaching your child to cycle. Why…?

  • Stabilisers teach a child NOT to find their core balance (because they don't need to!)
  • Stabilisers encourage backwards pedalling (which is super unhelpful on a pedal bike)
  • Stabilisers teach children to lean the wrong way when turning corners.

So if your child has used stabilisers, it's helpful to first come for a Pedal Ready Assessment. This gives us a chance to see the extent to which your child is physically ready for pedals. At your assessment, if we see that your child is NOT yet physically ready for pedals – we can provide a balance bike to take home, as well as balance bike challenge ideas to make it fun. This will enable your child to develop the essential foundation of balance to get them ready for their learn to cycle session. If your child has not shown interest in the balance bike in the past, we are confident that after their Pedal Ready Assessment, they will begin to connect with being on a balance bike.

Why does a balance bike matter?

Balance bikes help children learn all the core skills of balancing, gliding and manoeuvring a bike – creating a strong foundation to then transition onto pedals. If your child has limited experience of balance bikes, it's super helpful for us to be able to give them some time getting to grips with feeling really comfortable on a balance bike before teaching them to cycle.

At your Pedal Ready Assessment, if we see that your child struggles with their physical readiness for pedals – we can provide a balance bike to take home, as well as balance bike challenges ideas to make it fun.

Why does age matter?

Younger children can be AMAZING on their balance bikes – but that doesn't mean that they are ready for pedals. Under the age of 4.5 years, they are not always cognitively ready: The ability to simultaneously pedal forwards, look forwards and keep their feet on the pedals.

Cognitive readiness is not influenced by practice on a balance bike. It's a bit like rubbing your tummy and patting your head at the same time! It takes a certain level of cognitive maturity to put those skills together.

Cognitive readiness happens for different children at different times and is usually in place for all children by the time they are 4.5 years old. Before that age, it is worth checking by doing a Pedal Ready Assessment. This avoids getting them onto pedals at the wrong time when it could become a negative, frustrating experience.
